Before writing or digital printing, printers use texts called Placeholder Text to predict what the written work will look like and make design changes. For example, in the modern world, Website Designers Need text that they can temporarily use before the content of the site is created to make adjustments such as what the font layout will be, how it will look, font and size on this page when they design a new page.
Where Does Lorem Ipsum Come From?
Lorem ipsum is not a new text; rather, 16. it is a placeholder that has been used in printing since the century. Although it is not known which printer it was first used by, it was taken from an old text by a printer in the 1500s, the location of words was mixed in a way that would be quite random, and started a centuries-long tradition of placeholders.
Although its words were later mixed, the original text is not a random text at all, and the randomization process was also not flawlessly performed, some parts of which remained the same as the original text. This text is taken from de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, the extremities of good and Evil, which Cicero wrote in 45 BC (specifically chapters 1.10.32 and 1.10.33), as revealed by Richard McClintock, Professor of Latin at Hampden-Syndney College in Virginia. This book is a text of ethics (moral philosophy) that was especially popular in the Renaissance period. In the work, the parts through which Lorem Ipsum passes are shown below in bold letters:
"Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam, eaque ipsa quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt explicabo. Nemo enim ipsam voluptatem quia voluptas sit aspernatur aut odit aut fugit, sed quia consequuntur magni dolores eos qui ratione voluptatem sequi nesciunt. Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit, sed quia non numquam eius modi tempora incidunt ut labore et dolore magnam aliquam quaerat voluptatem. Ut enim ad minima veniam, quis nostrum exercitationem ullam corporis suscipit laboriosam, nisi ut aliquid ex ea commodi consequatur? As you can see, letters and words have been moved, shifted, new words and letters have been added, existing letters have been mixed together; but it is clear that it is quite similar to the original text.
It is interesting that a work written 2 millennia before today is all over the internet and modern design today. It is also interesting that this is a fundamental work of ethics and makes extremely interesting determinations.
