The fundus of the eye is examined using a magnifying lens and a light (back of the inside of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve). The doctor may use medicinal eye drops to dilate (enlarge) the pupils so that he or she can see past the pupil to the rear of the eye. Fundoscopy can be performed to screen for glaucoma, macular degeneration, eye cancer, optic nerve issues, and eye injuries. Also known as ophthalmoscopy.
